Spain: Thousands of Republicans hit Madrid to protest against monarchy

In celebration of the 88th anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic, thousands of people gathered in the centre of Madrid on Sunday to demonstrate in favour of abolishing the monarchy.

Holding banners and posters in favour of a third Republic and chanting slogans, demonstrators carried the purple, yellow and red Second Republic tricolour while marching through the centre of the city.

The Second Spanish Republic was declared on 14 April 1931 following the deposition of Alfonso XIII, lasting some eight years.
