Moscow City Court sentenced Norwegian Frode Berg to 14 years in a strict-labour camp for espionage on Russian submarines on Tuesday.
Berg’s lawyer Ilya Novikov said that his client would not appeal the decision, but would petition for a pardon from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Berg expects the Norwegian government to undertake all possible diplomatic efforts to achieve the review and satisfaction of this petition in a diplomatic way,” the lawyer added.
The 63-year-old Norwegian was detained in Moscow in 2017 while allegedly receiving classified information from a Russian working at a defence enterprise which was under the control of the FSB.
