At least five suspects and one police officer died during an anti-militant operation in the Peshawari neighbourhood of Hayatabad on Tuesday. An officer and a soldier were also injured, according to military sources.

The seventeen-hour long operation ended on Tuesday after Pakistani forces stormed a house in Phase Seven of the district and neutralised the militants, following heavy exchanges of fire.

The security forces carried out a search operation, clearing the basement and ground floor of the building ahead of demolishing the property.

The property had been booby-trapped according to bomb disposal experts.

The Head of the Bomb Disposal Squad explained how they found the device, saying: “We just used and initiator of 250 grams (8.8oz), a very small one to avoid more damage but you saw explosion. It means their hidden explosive was to target our teams.”
