People always saw the economy, health and climate and energy policy as key election battlegrounds … but few could have predicted claims that this election would decide the future of the ute.

The coalition has seized on Labor’s electric cars policy as evidence that petrol-fuelled cars are under attack.

Labor would like to see electric cars at 50% of new vehicle sales by 2030.

Some car manufacturers themselves are working to an even faster timetable. Toyota has global plans to electrify its entire vehicle lineup by 2025.

Angelique Donnellan takes a look at where Australia stands right now in the move towards electric vehicles.
