The EU’s chief Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt said that the delay to the UK’s withdrawal would “poison” the European elections, while speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

He critisised the EU’s decision from the last week to provide extra time to Westminster, saying that the new deadline of October 31 is “in fact too near for a substantial rethink of Brexit and, at the same time, too far away to prompt any action.”

Verhofstadt also slammed UK politicians for going on holidays after receiving the extension.

“I never thought I would I say this in my life in this parliament but maybe the only thing that can save us is Nigel Farage,” he added.

Reacting to these remarks, European Council president Donald Tusk said that “the UK has the right and obligation to take part in this election as long as it is a member of the EU.”

He also urged Verhofstadt to “deeply rethink and reformulate” his argument, since he was “heartily and energetically applauded” by Farage.
