Finland: Nationalist Finns Party surges in election

Finland’s nationalist Finns Party came narrowly behind the Social Democrats in Sunday’s general election.

Party members celebrated the results at their election headquarters in Helsinki.

Chairman Jussi Halla-aho thanked supporters for their “unbelievable work and spirit” during the election campaign.

With over 97% of the ballots counted, the Social Democrats took 17.8% of the vote, with the Finns Party on 17.6%.

The result means the Finns Party more than double their number of seats, taking 39 in the 200-seat parliament.
